How we make money.
Right now: we don't. We write it plainly rather than bury it in small print — it is the only way our advice is worth anything.
Where we stand today
WhatchaMakin sells nothing and earns nothing. No affiliate programme is open at this date: the links to Rougier & Plé and Cultura are ordinary links that pay us nothing.
That is the natural order of things — an affiliate network doesn't accept a site that has just opened. We will apply once the site has lived a little.
What will change
Once a programme is active, the retailer will pay us a commission on purchases made after a click from our pages. The rates advertised by the two retailers we list run from 1% to 10% depending on the programme.
It will not change the price you pay: the commission comes out of the retailer's margin, never added to your basket.
What it will never change
- The order of recommendations. We rank by what serves a beginner, not by what pays. When two retailers sell the same kit, we lead with the cheaper one including delivery — even when that is the one paying us least.
- What we say about a box. If a kit is expensive for what it holds, we write it. If the seller doesn't detail the contents, we write that too.
- What stays out of the catalogue. An incomplete kit stays out, whatever the commission. That rule has already cost us an entire retailer.
How it will be flagged
Every button leading to a retailer will carry the words “affiliate link” directly beneath it — not only in the footer.
Paid links will carry the rel="sponsored" attribute. As long as a link earns nothing, it carries neither the wording nor the attribute: showing them falsely would damage the very trust they exist to build.
