The leather arrives already cut and already punched: the stitching holes are there, evenly spaced. All that is left is to pass two needles through the same hole in opposite directions — that is the saddle stitch, and it is the only move of the trade you need to learn. With no punch and no mallet, the barrier to entry disappears.

What will go wrong the first time
Your stitches will lean one way, then the other. That is because the needle order gets swapped along the way: the one coming from the front must always go first, for the whole seam. The second mistake is pulling too hard — waxed thread marks the leather and the stitch sinks in.
