A hollow needle, a taut cloth, and yarn pushed straight through: every stab leaves a loop on the other side. You don't sew and you don't knot — you punch, and the motif rises in relief. It's the fastest of the thread crafts to show a result.

What will go wrong the first time

Your loops will pull back out when you lift the needle. Two causes, always the same: you raise the needle instead of sliding it flat against the cloth, or the yarn is caught behind you and has no slack. And if the cloth sinks under the point, it isn't taut enough — it should sound like a drum skin when you tap it.
